Cheryl Burton (Birth names Cheryl Annette Burton) is an American award-winning journalist and news anchor. Currently, Burton serves as an anchor of ABC7 Eyewitness News at 5 PM and 10 PM along with Alan Krashesky. She anchors two of the most rated newscasts in Chicago. She joined ABC7 Chicago (WLS-TV) in 1992 where she has been working since. Burton’s reporting has sent her to the heart of Chicago neighborhoods, and also throughout the country and around the world. On April 23, 2008, Burton got injured after a man punched her in the head and face. The attacker, 28-year-old Gregory Perdue went on a fist-throwing rampage down a sidewalk in downtown Chicago. Perdue hit Burton while she was on her dinner break walking near Washington St. and State Street. Burton said that she thought a bullet had knocked her to the ground.

Regardless of an X-ray and a CAT scan revealing no serious damage, she stated she suffered from headaches for months after the attack. Perdue’s lawyer alleged during the trial that Perdue was schizophrenic. On five charges of aggravated battery, Perdue was found not guilty. Perdue was instead remanded to the state Department of Mental Health until April 2015, according to the judge.
