Joel Osteen Sermon

Osteen prepares his sermons by memorizing them and listening to himself on tape. Instead of focusing on sin, Osteen says he prefers to focus on God’s goodness and living an obedient life. He claims he strives to teach Biblical ideas in a straightforward manner, emphasizing the importance of love and a positive mindset. Joel’s sermons are all live-streamed on his social media accounts. His YouTube account is the most convenient way to keep up with his most recent sermons.

However, some criticize Osteen’s sermons and writings for preaching prosperity theology, or the prosperity gospel, that holds that material riches is God’s will for all pious Christians. On October 14, 2007, a 12-minute episode titled “Joel Osteen Answers His Critics” aired on 60 Minutes, during which Reformed theologian Michael Horton informed CBS News correspondent Byron Pitts that Osteen’s teaching is heresy. The problem with Osteen’s message, according to Horton, is that it makes religion about us rather than God.

Joel Osteen Hurricane

Following Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, Osteen came under attack for not making Lakewood Church, a 606,000-square-foot, 16,000-seat former sports arena, available as an emergency refuge for individuals displaced by the hurricane. The church and its associate pastors took to social media accounts stating that the church was “inaccessible due to severe flooding,”. However, Osteen disputed the claim that floodwaters closed the church, saying the church has been open from the beginning. He slammed the accusations terming them as false.

Lakewood declared on the evening of August 28 that it would open at noon the next day as a shelter for storm victims and emergency personnel, which it did. On August 15, 2018, less than a year after Harvey, the City of Houston and Mayor Sylvester Turner declared a day in celebration of Lakewood and Osteen’s support to the Houston area’s rebuilding efforts.
